There have been 18 DexCons, hence the name DexCon 18. it’s not the only convention that Double Exposure runs during the year. There are 4 cons each year, and they as different as an apple is to a doll. Playing games is open to anyone who is interested. All it takes is a simple registration process. This year, there were about 2000 players, and everyone was smiling and happy. For more information, please go here: http://www.dexposure.com/home.html
Starting in February, we have Dreamation, a small version of DexCon, with a more relaxed and interactive atmosphere. April brings Maelstrom, a wild and open Gaming weekend with no scheduled games. Instead, a player runs a game that they like and gather together players who want to play, and off they go and play. Anything can happen here, and it’s a great way to welcome Spring. DexCon takes up the entire 4th of July weekend.
And then there’s Metatopia. This is a Game Designers convention. For Game Designers, it’s like going to Disneyland. Metatopia is an entire weekend devoted to Game Design. Here, players and designers will find seminars on Game Design, demonstrations and displays of new games, as well as lots of games to play. The games found here are not yet found in any stores or online. They are works in progress, and many of them are just weeks or months away from being featured on such funding sites as Kickstarter. As a designer myself, this con is my favorite, as the advice and tips cannot be had anywhere else.
Double Exposure’s newest undertaking is the Envoy Program. The Gaming Industry struggles to get the exposure their products need. Conventions struggle to get Game vendors to display their games. Customers see only a small percentage of the games available at any convention or in any store. Game stores have little time to promote the games on their shelves. What are these groups to do? That’s where the Envoy Heralds come in.
“Our goal is nothing short of unification of the fractured pieces of the national gaming industry, to everyone’s benefit.” – Quote from the Envoy Herald online site.
Heralds are the core of the Envoy Program. They bare the ambassadors, if you will, between the Game company and the public. Their role is to get certified in a game, learn how to play it well enough to teach it, and then teach it to as many people as they can. The companies involved, over 30 as we speak, provide free copies of the games, with the understanding that the Herald will get that game out before an audience of players.
Tomorrow, I will visit the wonderful and innovative Games that were new this year to DexCon.
To Your Future,
